MPEG-DASH / MPD

What is an MPD manifest?

Understand the structure of an MPEG-DASH manifest and the data you can inspect in LinkPlay.

The index of an MPEG-DASH stream

MPD stands for Media Presentation Description. It is an XML document describing an MPEG-DASH stream and where its audio and video segments can be found. An MPD URL is not itself a video file.

Reading the structure

An MPD organizes a presentation into Period, AdaptationSet and Representation elements. Representations describe alternative qualities; segments can be addressed through URL templates or lists. A manifest can describe video on demand or a live stream.

What LinkPlay shows

After loading a manifest, explore the Overview, Video, Audio, DRM and XML tabs. The inspector shows declared codecs, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, language and audio channels when available.

The DRM tab displays protection signaling, KIDs and PSSH found in the XML. These details help diagnose a stream, but do not replace a license or guarantee playback compatibility.

When information is missing

A field absent from the XML may appear as “—”. The inspector is not a complete MPEG-DASH conformance validator and does not measure actual video quality. Playback also requires compatible browser codecs and access to media segments.
